Putting football fans at the heart of its 2010 FIFA World Cup coverage, CNN has created a global fanzone to unite and inform its sport-enthusiastic audience across CNN International, CNN.com, CNN iReport and CNN en Español.

“In the run-up to the World Cup, CNN has showcased the biggest interviews and established a reputation as the go-to place for football fans around the world,” said Tony Maddox, executive vice president and managing director of CNN International. “We have harnessed our global resources across television, online and social media platforms to genuinely unite the world around this spectacular sporting event.”

View from South Africa:

From Soccer City to Fan Park, CNN will have a team of eight correspondents in South Africa reporting live across CNN International and CNN en Español, delivering comprehensive coverage including match results, logistics and key storylines to viewers around the world. These reporters include Pedro Pinto, Alex Thomas, Michael Holmes, Isha Sesay, Robyn Curnow, Nkepile Mabuse, Diego Bustos and David McKenzie.

McKenzie will spend the entire month traveling around South Africa in a Winnebago and taking the pulse of the host country. As part of CNN's Team Winnebago, McKenzie will help tell the story of the World Cup through the voices of South Africa. From Cape Town to Graaff Reinet and Qunu to Soweto, Team Winnebago will cover more than 3,000 kilometers of highway, dusty tracks and snow-capped mountains during this month-long road trip. Users will be able to track McKenzie's journey on CNN.com through an interactive map that will showcase Team Winnebago's progress as well as the special reports they will file from the road. In addition, McKenzie will tweet about the places he has visited and where Team Winnebago will go next.

Aaron Mokoena , the captain of the host nation South Africa, will file exclusive video diaries for CNN and when appropriate, contribute exclusively to the network as a World Cup analyst. Ahead of the tournament, Mokoena, who is Bafana Bafana's most capped player, will be armed with a CNN flip cam so that he can provide viewers and users with an inside view of the Cup. These video diaries from the South Africa captain will be featured on CNN International and CNN.com at www.cnn.com/worldcup.

About the coverage on CNN International:

“Americans in Afghanistan” goes behind the headlines into a side of Afghanistan rarely seen. Two Americans living in Afghanistan and working with non-profit organizations share their lives through a series of firsthand video reports, revealing the struggles big and small and the moments of success that make their work worth it.

CNN.com will also feature a series, “The Handsome Furs Tour Asia.” Armed with two Flip cams, this indie rock duo husband and wife team of Dan Boeckner and Alexei Cox Perry documented their Asian tour first hand as they visited China, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand. The Asian tour featured in the series is in support of their second record, Face Control, which got an 8 out of 10 from indie tastemakers, Pitchfork.com and other critical acclaim. These self-described travel nerds share the fun, excitement and drama of visiting new places, meeting new people and testing new foods. Boeckner is also a member of indie rock break out band Wolf Parade.

CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta Spotlights ‘Medical Miracles’ in New Book & Documentary

CNN Press Release - Another Day: Cheating Death to debut Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18 at 8pm ET & PT on CNN

In his highly anticipated second book, CHEATING DEATH, available via booksellers after October 12, CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta recounts extraordinary stories of people who have survived exceptional medical emergencies – and the courageous doctors who helped save them against all odds – and oftenagainst standard protocol. A companion documentary, Another Day: Cheating Death, will debut on Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18 at 8pm, 11pm, and 2am, and on CNN International on Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25 (check local listings for airtimes). Gupta will discuss his book and documentary on Larry King Live on Thursday, October 8 at 9pm. All times Eastern.

Ten years ago, Anna Bagenholm was a 29-year-old Norwegian medical resident on a ski excursion when an accident landed her head first, in a freezing stream. In his book and documentary, Gupta recounts how Bagenholm’s core body temperature dipped to 56°F. She was clinically dead for three hours, yet doctors still managed to reviveher. Despite staggering odds, Bagenholm eventually made a full recovery. Gupta describes the “miracle” of her survival as not due to luck, but instead as the result of evidence-based calibrations and her experienced medical team, led by emergency physician Dr. Mads Gilbert.

Also among the stories Gupta tells for the documentary, is that of cardiac arrest survivor Chris Brooks, who lives largely because he is treated by an “Ice Doctor,” Gupta’s name for doctors who induce medical hypothermia to treat certain patients. Cold appears to slow metabolism enough to give doctors time to treat the underlying conditions, though a University of Chicago survey showed that fewer than 250 of the nation’s 6,000 hospitals practice “medical hypothermia.”
For the book, Gupta describes how school bus driver Mike Mertz collapsed at the wheel of his car in Glendale, Ariz. He survived because the Good Samaritan who found him, and the responding paramedics, used a new type of CPR. They administered rapid chest compressions on Mertz without pausing for mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. It took years of carefully collected case evidence, and a determined group of physicians, to change the CPR protocol in Arizona to de-emphasize artificial breathing. Despite statistics that show it markedly improves outcomes – Arizona remains the only state to adopt the new method, statewide.

Gupta’s book and documentary offer insights from his reporting and his professional experiences gathered over 15 years as a practicing neurosurgeon. Viewers are also encouraged to share their own stories of survival with him via Twitter @sanjayguptacnn. Gupta and others who have studied extraordinary survivors’ experiences will offer additional compelling stories of medical insights that are changing the boundary between life and death on www.cnnhealth.com. Excerpts from the book can also be found on the website. The documentary will be available via iTunes and Amazon.com after its broadcast premiere.

International media still on the money for the world’s senior financial decision makers, says Global Capital Markets Survey

CNN Press Release - CNN International tops list of news brands for the global financial community

Results released today by the Global Capital Markets Survey (GCMS) show that in difficult economic times senior bankers, chief financial officers and treasurers at the world’s largest organisations are tuning in to international television for their fix of up-to-the-minute news and information. GCMS represents two distinct types of respondents: those working in the world's largest organizations - the capital borrowers; and those working for banks and financial institutions - the capital lenders. The survey reports CNN International takes the top spot, ahead of news channels BBC World, CNBC and Bloomberg as the leading news brand for the global financial community, across all regions (Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and North America).

According to Global Capital Markets, 85% of those surveyed watched international television four weeks preceding the survey and 69% had tuned in to international television in the seven days leading up to the survey. The results validate international television as the medium of choice for corporate financial professionals who have a direct hand in raising capital and trading the markets during the recession.

“In tough times when market confidence is low, these results speak volumes from an audience who are key financial influencers and play an integral role in keeping the global economy ticking over. The main message for advertisers is that to reach this elusive audience of finance heavy-weights, CNN delivers that promise better than any other network”, said Jonathan Davies, Executive Vice President Ad Sales, CNN International.

Across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North America and the Asia-Pacific region, CNN leads its closest competitors BBC World, CNBC and Bloomberg in monthly, weekly and daily reach, cementing its position as the number one news brand across each region. Globally, 73% of financial management in the world’s 2000 largest organisations tune in to CNN each month, positioning the network 20 percentage points ahead of its nearest rival, CNBC (CNBC 53%, Bloomberg 45%, BBC World 45%). At 57%, CNN’s weekly reach ranks 17 percentage points higher than its nearest rival CNBC; the network also leads the field in daily reach.

Amongst the senior management of banks and financial institutions, CNN ranks as top choice, exhibiting a clear lead over the competition in all three measures. CNN connects with 72% of senior bankers on a monthly basis (Bloomberg 55%, CNBC 53%, BBC World 53%), 54% weekly (CNBC 41%, Bloomberg 39%, BBC World 36%) and 29% daily (CNBC 23%, Bloomberg 21%, BBC World 16%).

As today’s financial professionals increasingly look to online for the latest news and information, CNN records similar success with its branded websites. Combined, CNN.com and CNNMoney.com (24%) rank second only to Bloomberg.com (38%) in terms of popularity amongst survey respondents, ahead of Reuters.com (23%), FT.com (22%) and WSJ.com (20%).

“We have a growing portfolio of banking and finance clients including Zurich, ING, Deutsche Bank, Barclays Capital and Qatar Financial Centre who continue to advertise with us across both web and TV”, added Davies. “Our cross platform results are an acknowledgement that we’re getting it right for the financial audience”.

About the survey:
The GCMS Survey provides data on TV viewing, website usage and readership among CFOs and senior financial decision makers in the world’s largest organisations, and among top managers of financial institutions, commercial and investment banks. Conducted by Think Media Consultancy, with a global universe representing 9756 individuals in 33 countries, the fieldwork was carried out between October 2008 and March 2009.
