Philips chooses CNN as media home for inaugural Livable Cities Award

CNN Press Release - Award goes live on CNN platforms May 25th as primary element of Philips’ new branding campaign

Royal Philips Electronics has chosen CNN International (EMEA) and its US sister network HLN (formerly Headline News) as its commercial media partners for its inaugural Livable Cities Award. This new global Award is designed to encourage the development of simple solutions to improve the health and well-being of people living in cities. The total prize fund, valued at €125,000, is available to individuals, community groups and businesses to help translate practical, achievable ideas that make cities better places in which to live. The campaign launches 25th May, and will be promoted in commercial time on CNN International and HLN through to early spring 2011, and will live online at www.cnn.com/livablecities.

Philips is harnessing the expertise of Turner Commercial Productions (CNN Ad Sales’ dedicated commercial production unit) in creating innovative, bespoke campaign elements. The ambitious new global award forms part of Philips’ strategic campaign to drive engagement around a topic that reflects its brand values. The Award’s focus aligns with Philips’ brand messaging, which centres on the importance of creating meaningful innovations to improve people’s health and well-being. In addition the Award provides a framework for repeat brand interactions with a target audience of corporate influencers.
“This cross-platform solution has audience engagement at its heart and is designed to maximise Philips’ commitment to helping people in urban communities achieve healthy, fulfilled lives. By creating the Livable Cities Award with CNN Ad Sales, Philips is able to create a branded environment to invite ongoing dialogue with a targeted audience,” says
Max Raven, Senior VP Advertising Sales, CNN International.

The Livable Cities Award represents an ongoing forum for Philips to address global trends as highlighted by the WHO World Health Day project this year – ‘Urbanization and Health’, in a way that also complements their desire to promote their credentials as a leader in the health and well-being space.

The media agency is Carat International. The commercial partnership between CNN and Philips around the Award builds on Philips’ commercial association last month with CNN’s ‘Urban Planet’. The week long ‘Urban Planet’ programming focussed on the well-being of city dwellers, launching in line with World Health Day; and will enjoy a second burst of activity in November around the World Health Organisation’s Global Forum on Urbanization and Health in Kobe, Japan. Philips’ branding will appear May 22nd and 23rd on CNN around a repeat airing of the ‘Urban Planet’ special, the weekend before the launch of the Livable Cities Award.

About the Award promotion on CNN
The initiative will run at the intervals below over the next 12 months on CNN on in commercial time, targeting a corporate audience, and will be supported with a commercial online hub providing a bespoke destination for interested parties and inspired by the newly announced WHO campaign 1,000 Cities, 1,000 Lives:

• To coincide with 25th May launch, CNN International EMEA and HLN will air two 60” announcement films which will run over a four week period.
• From 27th September to 24th October, in the run up to the WHO Global Forum on Urbanization and Health in Japan in November, four 60” films will showcase the best of the entries to date reminding interested parties that they can enter via the dedicated online hub until October 28th.
• Over six weeks in early spring 2011, 30” films will feature each category shortlist and viewers/users will be encouraged to vote on-line and have their say in the final choice of who should win the first ever Livable Cities Award.
• A 60” film about the successful winner’s idea will run on air for two weeks.
• Philips will feature prominently as CNN’s commercial partner for World Health Day 2011 giving further opportunity to show the 60” winner’s film on air and online.
• The films will also be available to view on the Philips Livable Cities Award hub and this footage will be refreshed throughout the campaign encouraging repeat interaction with the site.

About the Livable Cities Award
• The awards are designed to reward the best ideas – from individuals or organisations - for encouraging cities and individuals to improve their health at a global and regional level.

The award categories are:

- Well-being Outdoors: initiatives that will help citizens feel safe in public spaces or help create city identity and foster a sense of belonging;
- Independent Living: initiatives that will help the growing number of elderly people living alone to feel secure and comfortable in a city, with with appropriate access to healthcare
- Healthy Lifestyle at Work and Home: initiatives that will support a healthy body and mind, whether through a person’s surroundings or via other essentials such as exercise, sleep and diet.

• An expert panel of judges is being enlisted to assess entries to The Livable Cities Award. They will be tasked with choosing the ideas that will best help improve the lives and health of urban dwellers across the globe.
• American urban studies theorist, Professor Richard Florida, Author of The Great Reset and Director of the Martin Prosperity Institute and Professor of Business and Creativity at Rotman School of Management at the University ofToronto, will be using his extensive knowledge and expertise to chair the panel of judges.
• A short list of entrants, selected by the panel of judges, will be announced in February 2011. CNN’s audience will then vote on their choice of winner in each category and the successful entrant will receive a cash prize.
• The judges will then decide who, from the category winners, deserves the overall prize and the chance to realise their urban improvement projects or ideas.
• An overall award of €75,000 will be granted for the best idea submitted in any of the three categories, along with two additional awards of €25,000 for the best submissions in the two categories not covered by the overall award.

CNN International Changes

Have you noticed that CNN International is broadcasting from a new location within CNN Center in Atlanta? They are broadcasting from the former Headline News control room. Headline News stopped broadcasting their normal weekend programming from there when they moved into a new control room earlier this year.

CNN International is broadcasting from there because their current set is undergoing a complete renovation to debut sometime in early 2009.

More changes are in store for CNN International in 2009. We'll keep you informed on all of them as soon as we can.

Thanks to Thot on the CNNfan.org forums for use of the screenshot!

On the Morning Express Blog this morning, anchor Robin Meade mentions that Headline News Business Correspondent Jennifer Westhoven sprained her foot in the network's New York bureau yesterday.

She *sprained her foot at work* yesterday! Word on the street is…she was a real trouper. She finished out her work day…starting off with a cane…but progressing quickly to piggy back rides to maneuver around the office. (She’s in New York, we’re in Atlanta…so I can not give you an eyewitness account).

New Headline News Graphics?

Unless this is just for the 12:00 CT hour of Headline News, it looks as if they have new graphics which are very smiliar to the Morning Express with Robin Meade graphics. I normally watch Headline News beginning with the 1:00 AM hour, so I will verify then whether or not their graphics are the same. The financial/sports ticker box is gone from these graphics.

Update: HLN has indeed changed their graphics. They have definitely removed the CNN from the name as you could tell that Christi caught herself before saying "CNN Headline News" and instead said "Headline News".

Headline News Announces Not Just Another Cable News Show

CNN Pressroom - New Weekend Show Mines CNN Archives for Lighthearted Look Back at Footage that Made Headlines

Coming off a year of continued ratings growth for its “news and views” programming strategy, Headline News will add Not Just Another Cable News Show to its weekend lineup, it was announced today by Ken Jautz, executive vice president of CNN Worldwide. The series will take a lighthearted look back at famous – and infamous – stories that made news. The series will premiere on Saturday, April 5, at 7 p.m. and will feature some of the most unforgettable political blunders of our time. Future episodes will highlight bad celebrity behavior, stupid criminals and unusual pop culture fads.

CNN Announces Global Coverage for First World Autism Awareness Day

CNN Pressroom - Multiplatform Effort Will Report on Science, Intervention and Resources for Parents on Wednesday, April 2

CNN will use its unparalleled newsgathering resources to report on the global impact and latest science of the developmental syndrome of autism for the first “World Autism Awareness Day.” Online as well as on CNN/U.S., CNN International, CNN en Español and Headline News, CNN will report on medical insights, information on treatments and intervention, and details about services available for those living with autism for the inaugural international awareness day on Wednesday, April 2.

On CNN/U.S., chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta will report on a range of issues related to autism spectrum disorder beginning on CNN’s American Morning at 6 a.m. through Anderson Cooper 360°.

Worldwide, it is estimated that as many as 35 million people have autism and face considerable challenges and often discrimination. In November 2007, the United Nations declared that April 2 would be an annual day to “encourage Member States to take measures to raise awareness about children with autism throughout society.”

“Bringing awareness and information to viewers and online users globally on topics of urgency and importance, like autism, is exactly what CNN does best,” said Jon Klein, president of CNN/U.S. “And Sanjay Gupta as our daylong guide for our reporting on this issue is a real differentiator for CNN. It will give depth to our reporting that no other network can offer.”

In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated in 2007 that as many as 1 in 150 8-year-old children in multiple areas of the United States had an autism spectrum disorder. Parents must often navigate their own paths to find helpful therapies and finance expensive education and other services independently.

In anticipation of World Autism Awareness Day, CNN.com will offer expanded coverage of this mysterious neurological disorder. Viewers will be able to access news and information including the latest medical theories and research about autism as well as the stories of people who live every day with the condition. Through multimedia and interactive elements, as well as traditional stories and videos, viewers will be invited to expand their knowledge and understanding of autism.

Viewers and users are encouraged to share their firsthand accounts of life with autism through video, photo, audio or text submissions to www.iReport.com, CNN’s recently launched user-generated community Web site. Autism-related iReports are available at www.iReport.com/tags/autism; and iReport.com contributors also may gain recognition by having the material they submit to the site – once vetted and approved for use – appear on a CNN network or CNN.com.

On the weekend preceding World Autism Awareness Day, Saturday, March 29, and Sunday, March 30, chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta will devote the full broadcast of House Call with Dr. Sanjay Gupta to explain the latest medical thinking regarding early signs of autism. While most children are diagnosed with autism at about age two, studies suggest that earlier diagnoses may offer opportunities for critical behavioral interventions. Gupta will explain warnings signs that may be observable as early as 6 to 12 months of age, when early interventions may improve developmental outcomes. House Call with Dr. Sanjay Gupta airs Saturdays and Sundays at 8:30 a.m. Gupta’s investigation into issues related to insurance coverage and educational therapies for families living with autism will be featured on CNN Radio for affiliates. On CNN.com, the “Paging Dr. Gupta Blog” and “Paging Dr. Gupta” podcast will also feature helpful information for families on autism.

Also on Saturday, March 29, personal finance editor Gerri Willis will offer advice for parents on coping with the tremendous costs of autism for Open House. Open House airs Saturdays at 9:30 a.m.

Preliminary coverage plans for World Autism Awareness Day on Wednesday, April 2, include:
