UPDATE #2 - 1:30am September 9, 2011: Another email tipster says to expect Quest Means Business to re-air at 10:00pm (eastern) on ALL CNN International feeds. If true, then the network has well and truly lost the plot. A topical business news program, tracking (in part) the latest market movements on Wall Street, airing 8 hours after it first runs. You read that correct. An 8 hour old program running instead of a live program during Asia's late morning. UPDATE #1 - 2:00am September 8, 2011: CNN Observations is still awaiting confirmation from CNN International on whether the network will go ahead and air the 10:00pm (eastern) replay of Anderson Cooper 360º from next week, but two emails from Atlanta suggest that the northern feeds may take the replay, while feeds in Asia Pacific will replay Quest Means Business in the 10:00pm (eastern) time slot.Again, CNN Observations is still awaiting official confirmation from CNN.
Whilst I was politely reminded in one of the emails I received that Quest Means Business is a CNN International production, the ratio of International Vs. Domestic-produced programs on CNN International wasn't really the point I was trying to highlight during the first part of the post below. The point I was trying to make is that CNN International is down an hour of LIVE news during the Asia morning dayside hours. In that context, whether it's the repeat of Anderson Cooper 360º or Quest Means Business that goes to air is pretty much redundant as both will be on tape.

Anderson Cooper 360º has been simulcast on CNN International for a number of years at the same time it went to air live at 10:00pm (eastern) in the U.S. Once the program moved to 8:00pm (eastern) early in August, CNN International decided to stick with airing the taped replay at 10:00pm (eastern). As of this week, that’s all changed. Sort of.
Luis Carlos Velez joins CNN International as co-anchor of World Business Today
After serving as a anchor and Senior Producer for CNN en Español for more than five years, Luis Carlos Velez will be moving to New York to co-anchor the 8 PM ET version of World Business Today on CNN International with Colleen McEdwards from Atlanta and Pauline Chiou from Hong Kong. He starts on-air Tuesday, March 1. World Business Today provides an overview of late-breaking financial, economic, and business news from around the world.
Luis Carlos Velez becomes the first Hispanic to be anchoring news at CNN International, and the first to jump from CNN en Español to CNN International.
CNN and Turner Broadcasting Host Georgia High School Students for Week-long Leadership Program
CNN Press Release - CNN Worldwide, in partnership with Turner BroadcastingSystem, Inc. (TBS, Inc) and 21st Century Leaders, is hosting the fourth annual Leadership Unplugged: A CNN Experience, a week-long program developed exclusively by CNN employees to teach rising high school juniors and seniors in Georgia about media literacy, journalism and personal leadership. Leadership Unplugged takes place June 22-26, 2009, on the campus of Georgia Institute of Technology.
“My CNN colleagues and I are thrilled to offer these exceptional young people a forum to further develop their personal leadership styles, as well as learn more about some of the most critical challenges facing media professionals every day,” said Susan Grant, executive vice president of CNN News Services. “The opportunity to mentor Leadership Unplugged ambassadors is an honor for CNN executives and anchors alike, and we hope each of the students gains as much from the experience as we do each year.”
During the Leadership Unplugged program, 100 high school students - selected from a competitive pool of applicants from across the state of Georgia - will learn how news stories are presented on different platforms, as well as the impact social networking is having on the media landscape. The students will participate in workshops and discussion groups on a range of topics including diversity, ethics in media and audience engagement; and will attend panels and mentoring sessions featuring CNN executives, reporters and anchors including CNN’s Kyra Phillips and Tony Harris; HLN’s Richard Lui; CNN International’s Colleen McEdwards; and CNN.com’s Reggie Aqui and Melissa Long.
The curriculum for Leadership Unplugged is developed by CNN Student News, CNN’s cost-and-commercial-free news program for middle and high school students, and the classes and workshops are led by volunteer employees at CNN and TBS, Inc. After attending the classes and workshops throughout the week, the students work in teams to develop a story idea based upon the lessons they have learned. The week concludes with the student teams presenting their proposals before a panel of judges comprised of CNN and TBS, Inc. executives.

CNN Plans for Pope Benedict’s First Official U.S. Visit

CNN will use its unparalleled newsgathering resources to cover Pope Benedict’s first official papal visit to the United States, from Tuesday, April 15, through Sunday, April 20, in Washington, D.C., and New York. Fionnula Sweeney presents another special this weekend, as CNN/I looks at the 6 Day War, 40 years ago when Israel claimed land from neighbouring countries, which has resulted in a constant fightback ever since. Six Day War: Then And Now premieres 0730 gmt Saturday, and is repeated at 1830 gmt Saturday and 1130 gmt Sunday
Colleen McEdwards has been filing special reports and coverage on CNN/I from the US presidential debates in New Hampshire. CNN/I had live coverage of the Democratic Candidate Debate on Sunday from 2300 gmt.
Around the same time on Monday, CNN Today from Hong Kong was dipping into CNN/US coverage of reaction from this debate.
Live coverage continues on CNN/I tonight (Tuesday) at 2300 gmt until around 0200 gmt Wednesday, when the Republican Candidate Debate takes place in New Hampshire. As well as CNN/US and CNN/I, CNN Pipeline have also been covering the debates and reaction extensively.
A serious fire has forced live programming from CNN's London HQ, Turner House, to be suspended until further notice. The fire, above a clothing department store on the adjacent Oxford Road - London's busiest shopping district - started just before 1900 bst (1800 gmt) Thursday. Half an hour later, World Business Today went on-air from the adjacent Turner House. However, this was quickly pulled off air as Atlanta took over live programming for the rest of the evening. Jim Clancy and Colleen McEdwards took turns with World Business Today, World News Europe and the evening edition of Business International.
Thirteen hours on, and fire crews are still on the scene tackling the blaze. All morning programming from Turner House in London has been suspended. CNN Today came from CNN Center this morning, with Michael Holmes and Jonathan Mann hosting. Mann also hosted Business International at 0700 gmt.
A large part of West-Central London has been cordoned off, with a quarter-mile exclusion zone in place until Saturday morning, according to Westminster City authorities. This area generally attracts between 250,000 to 500,000 shoppers a day. If the exclusion zone is a quarter-mile in each direction, then a large portion of Great Marlborough Street, where CNN London is based, is also included. Therefore, there is a chance that Turner House is currently empty. It is not known if the other networks to broadcast from Turner House, including the Cartoon Network and TCM, are affected.
There are fears that the building on fire may collapse. So far, there have been no reports of any injuries.

Update: I'm also hearing that the CNN London newsroom starting filling with smoke shortly after the fire started last night, and was therefore evacuated. I would imagine they'd have to turn off the air-conditioning/distribution in there to stop the smoke from coming in.
Additionally, Jonathan Mann is putting in quite a shift! He was live on Your World Today yesterday at around 12pm Eastern (1600 gmt). And then he was doing CNN Today at 12am Eastern (0400 gmt) this morning! He's still on right now, doing Business International until 7am Eastern (1100 gmt)!! I wonder if he's slept...
There appears to have been some kind of problem at the CNN London bureau, as CNN International programming from there was interrupted tonight. At 1830 gmt Max Foster kicked off the first of the night's editions of World Business Today from London. I actually left the house to go to the store just after that. However, when I returned Jim Clancy was hosting the show from CNN Center. At 1900 gmt, rather than coming from London (with Fionnuala Sweeney or Becky Anderson), World News Europe also came from CNN Center with Colleen McEdwards, who made a point of stressing the show was coming from there.
Jim Clancy was hosting World Business Today again live from CNN Center between 1930 and 2030 gmt.
From yesterday, Max Foster has been in Atlanta co-anchoring Your World Today with Colleen McEdwards. Max is usually to be found co-anchoring CNN Today, or Business International, from London.
It is not known if this is a temporary or long-term arrangement, but it has been known to happen before (recently, Richard Quest spent a few week's co-hosting Your World Today).
