Jon Stewart Talks Rick Sanchez

Jon Stewart used his show last night to respond to comments made by former CNN anchor Rick Sanchez last week.

Stewart, who spent the first 9 minutes of The Daily Show on the Sanchez story, said, "Now I want to clarify something here. We weren't making fun of Rick Sanchez because of some slight to his ethnicity. It's just that we here see him as kind of a complex television character who is flawed, but fascinating to watch every week."

Stewart then went on to play a tape comparing Rick Sanchez with Michael Scott - the fictional character from NBC's 'The Office'.

The segment ended with Stewart commenting, "I think the guy's [Rick Sanchez] got a good heart. Perhaps even CNN will now be looking to use his vacated timeslot to get in touch with their better Sanchez and starve parasites like myself by putting on quality news and discussion."

The full segment from The Daily Show is below.

Insiders are telling us that Afghanistan correspondent Atia Abawi has left the network. Her bio has been removed from the website. CONFIRMED: CNN spokesperson: "We have parted ways."

It looks as though former CNN En Español New York-based and CNN Domestic Atlanta-based correspondent Inés Ferré has left the network. Inés has been removed from both the CNN and CNN En Español bio pages and she recently tweeted about new beginnings. She has also recently launched a portfolio website of her work on CNN.

Recently, CNNi iReport for CNN and fill-in anchor Errol Barnett headed back to the United Arab Emirates to fill-in as host on Prism. Could this mean that Stan Grant has left the network again or moving elsewhere within the network? Developing...

TVNewser is reporting that CNN Beirut bureau chief Cal Perry has left the network. They have his full E-Mail to the staff in which he states that he has decided that it is time to leave the network.

Rick Sanchez Out At CNN

CNN today fired Rick Sanchez after comments he made during a radio interview on Thursday. Brian Stelter details the backstory and today's events...

CNN said in a statement Friday evening, “Rick Sanchez is no longer with the company. We thank Rick for his years of service and we wish him well.”

Mr. Sanchez’s comments came Thursday during a contentious conversation with the comedian Pete Dominick on satellite radio. By Friday afternoon, a
recording of the conversation had circulated widely on the Internet. He had appeared on the radio show as part of a tour to promote his book, “Conventional
Idiocy.”

In the conversation, Mr. Sanchez, who is Cuban American, repeatedly suggested that he had experienced subtle forms of racism in his television career.

CNN says the 3pm - 5pm block, formerly hosted by Sanchez, will be filled with an extended CNN Newsroom for the "foreseeable future."

Rick Sanchez De-Twittered

TV Newser details how CNN's Rick Sanchez was among around 30 people who had their Twitter accounts hacked inside the last 24 hours.

CNN addresses the issue in a statement:

"Twitter accounts used by CNN's Rick Sanchez and many others were recently compromised. As a result, some Twitter users may have received offensive messages attributed to Rick when the breach occurred. This is annoying, though such breaches are not uncommon when using social networking sites.

Rick has notified Twitter of his account's breach and taken some basic steps to secure his account's access. Rick enjoys communicating with viewers via Twitter and he and many others at CNN find social networking a valuable tool in their shows. Rick will continue to use Twitter — along with MySpace and Facebook — to engage CNN's audience."

CNN Launches 2008 Broken Government Series as Campaign Year Heats Up

CNN Pressroom - ‘Critical Condition’ Installment Reveals Gaps in Health Care Coverage in U.S., Examines Debate over Issue

CNN Productions plans to produce a series of one-hour documentaries in 2008 under its successful Broken Government brand. As it did in the 2006 midterm election, the series seeks to offer clarity to the political topics receiving close attention during the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign.

The first documentary in the series, Broken Government: Health Care Critical Condition, is reported by CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Critical Condition will premiere on Thursday, Jan. 31, at 11 p.m., immediately following the CNN/Los Angeles Times/POLITICO Democratic Presidential Candidates Debate and will replay on Saturday, Feb. 2, and Sunday, Feb. 3, at 11 p.m. All times Eastern.

In Critical Condition, Gupta focuses on the gaps in health care coverage experienced by the more than 45 million Americans who lack adequate health insurance. These include consumers with health insurance still vulnerable to bankruptcy by medical bills and the uninsured who cannot afford healthcare. Gupta also examines various health care plan proposals and the pros and cons of universal health care coverage in other countries.

Other Broken Government documentaries in the 2008 series will feature CNN’s Rick Sanchez taking an in-depth look at inconsistent and ineffective U.S. immigration policies; chief technology and environment correspondent Miles O’Brien investigating the impact of government policies on the environment; and a documentary on the government failures at the federal, state and local levels that continue to plague those impacted by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Additional programs in the series will be announced later in the campaign season.

Carol Kinstle is the executive producer and the director of CNN’s health and medical unit. Mark Nelson is the vice president and senior executive producer of CNN Productions.

Year-End Special Explores Impact of User-Generated Content on News

CNN Pressroom - CNN’s ‘iReport: Caught on Camera’ Premieres Wednesday, Dec. 26, at 8 p.m. (ET)

As 2007 comes to a close, CNN reviews the year’s most talked-about stories including the Virginia Tech tragedy, the Minneapolis bridge collapse and California’s wildfire through the eyes of its citizen journalists. “iReport: Caught on Camera” will highlight the most memorable news events of 2007 by showcasing material from iReporters – viewers and users who submit their own pictures and video of the news of the day via cell phones, cameras and other devices.

Hosted by Out in the Open’s Rick Sanchez, “iReport: Caught on Camera” will premiere on CNN/U.S. and CNN HD on Wednesday, Dec. 26, at 8 p.m., and replays on Tuesday, Jan. 1, at 8 p.m. All times Eastern. The special will also air on CNN International at various times depending on location.

“It’s hard to turn away when watching a news story unfold in the raw – unfiltered and user-generated,” Sanchez said. “iReport is cutting edge and has become a meeting place where news, television and today’s technology intersect and keep us in awe.”

The one-hour special is packed with the best iReports of 2007, featuring interviews with iReporters and CNN/U.S. President Jon Klein about the year’s biggest stories including the Virginia Tech tragedy, the riots in Myanmar, the Minneapolis bridge collapse and California’s wildfires. CNN anchors and correspondents Jim Acosta, Wolf Blitzer, Matthew Chance, Heidi Collins, Anderson Cooper, Don Lemon, David Mattingly, Chad Myers, Nic Robertson and Ted Rowlands also add dimension to the top stories from their own reporting during the year.

With more than 73,000 submissions in 2007, CNN’s iReport exposed the world to some of the most compelling images in the news over the last year and helped establish user-generated content as a powerful and viable means of newsgathering. The special replays compelling iReports of an earthquake in Peru, an eyewitness to a suicide bombing in Afghanistan, the top political iReports with Tom Foreman, a Taser incident during a John Kerry speech, severe weather around the world and contributions from U.S. troops and their families.

On the morning of April 16, iReport created a remarkable impression when chilling cell phone video from the campus of Virginia Tech provided viewers with a first-hand look at the tragedy that claimed the lives of 32 victims. Within 24 hours of the Virginia Tech tragedy, CNN received more than 420 submissions, ranging from eyewitness accounts of the events on campus to reflective and emotional tributes to those that lost their lives. The latest submission record was set during the recent California wildfires, when iReporters shared 11,680 videos and photos.

Viewers submit iReport material through a “Send Your iReport” link at CNN.com or by e-mail at ireport@cnn.com. Submitted material undergoes the same extensive vetting process CNN employs for all content that goes on air or online.

“iReport: Caught on Camera” will be broadcast in high definition. The executive producer is Michael Kane.

CNN Worldwide, a division of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., a Time Warner Company, is the most trusted source for news and information. CNN Radio Reviews New Adoption Rules in Ever-changing ‘Baby Market’

CNN Pressroom - CNN anchor Rick Sanchez guides listeners through the shifting maze of rules, red tape and protocol involving adoption for the network’s latest hour-long program, “The Baby Market.” Along the way, CNN Radio listeners discover how new bureaucratic delays cause children to suffer and to remain in orphanages or foster care for even longer periods of time.

This program will be available to affiliates on Friday, April 27, at 10 a.m. (ET) and will be produced by CNN Radio supervising producer Sherri Maksin.

In “The Baby Market,” the people most intimately involved in the adoption process – adoption lawyers, agency representatives, adoption advocates and parents – explain the differences between domestic and international adoption, debate the issue of whether adopted children should have access to their birth records and if reunions with birth parents are a good idea. They also help explain the latest changes in adoption procedures, including:

· China’s stricter policies on international adoptions, going into effect on Tuesday, May 1, which forbade obese and single people from adopted Chinese children;

· Lengthy delays facing Americans wanting to adopt from Russia; and

· A recent U.S. government recommendation that Americans not adopt children from Guatemala due to rampant corruption and fraud in that country.

Guests include CNN correspondent John Vause, who reports about the adoption market from Beijing; Aaron Britvan, an adoption attorney and co-chair of the New York State Bar Association’s adoption committee; Tom DiFilipo, president of the Joint Council on International Children’s Services; Adam Pertman, executive director of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute; and a number of adoptive parents.

“The Baby Market” also will be available on CNN.com’s podcasting page, which can be found at http://www.CNN.com/podcasting, and at CNN’s dedicated space on iTunes. Additionally, CNN Radio programming, including long-form programs, can be heard streamed for the Web on the CNN.com home page.

CNN Radio is a full-service network, providing its approximately 2,000 worldwide affiliates with the latest information in news, sports and business. Utilizing CNN’s 36 bureaus worldwide, CNN Radio offers an unmatched menu of actualities and reports through satellite feeds and an affiliate-accessible Web site. CNN Radio is based in CNN’s world headquarters in Atlanta, with personnel, including radio-only correspondents, located at the CNN bureau in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and New York.
