That's how it's been for the past year or so when working on this blog. I love CNN, and most of the time was accused of just regurgitating their press releases and saying nothing but good. That may have been the case, but when we did give CNN their medicine, boy did I hear about it!

Organizations need to be able to take the bad along with the good - especially when there's far less bad than good.

That takes the fun out of it for me. I'm a fan. First and foremost. I'm not a blogger - I just use blog software to get the job done. Sure, sometimes I don't want to give away a source, and that MAY end up making me a blogger. I want to connect fans with information about their favorite CNN anchors, correspondents, and shows. It was fun getting to beat everyone to the punch breaking the news with the details about Robin Meade's new branded morning show.

Since we launched in November 2006, we have had a lot of fun with the blog, such as being the first to report about updates to the Asia-Pacific HQ Set, the move of Richard Lui from CNN Pipeline, new CNNI worldwide correspondent branding, interviews with CNN past and present, and fun things including a tour of Studio 7 as it was being completed at CNN World Headquarters (I was unable to provide coverage there, unfortunately!)

It's time to move on - it's been fun. The articles are still up in case you'd like a look back.

Thanks so so so much to everyone who's helped make this blog what it is today. You've all been such a huge help! I couldn't have done it without you.

I plan on keeping this domain and my CNNO twitter account - unless I can get a good offer for it! E-Mail me - mail@cnnobservations.com if you're interested.
Today's Page Six article in the New York Post mentions that Out Front host Erin Burnett is demanding a sizeable chunk of change if she were to move to the morning block of programming at CNN.

She has a clause in her contract that requires CNN to air her show in prime time. If new boss Jeff Zucker wants her to get up at 4 a.m., Erin is demanding a sizable chunk of cash — more than her $2.5 million salary — to buy her out of the prime-time clause. Insiders say Zucker believes she should be grateful she’s being offered a marquee job and he has started to look elsewhere for an anchor to partner with Cuomo. Burnett is telling her staff she doesn’t want to go to the morning. “What she means is she doesn’t want to go at the old price,” sniffed a source.

What do you think? Do you agree with Zucker or do you agree with Burnett? CNN's press release below.

CNN Press Release: Sara Ganim will join CNN as a correspondent based in Atlanta, it was announced today by Terence Burke, vice president of newsgathering for CNN/U.S.

Ganim (@sganim) joins CNN from The Patriot News in Harrisburg, Penn. While at The Patriot News, Ganim broke the story of the grand jury investigation into Jerry Sandusky, the former defensive coordinator for the storied Penn State University football program. Her reporting of Sandusky’s child sex abuse scandal that enveloped the school, head coach Joe Paterno and Sandusky’s Second Mile Charity garnered a Pulitzer Prize in 2012. Along with her print journalism experience, she has also served as an on-air contributor for CNN, HLN and In Session during Sandusky’s trial and conviction.

Prior to her work at The Patriot News, Ganim reported for the Centre Daily Times covering crime and the courts, and freelanced as a high-school student for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

“Sara is multi-talented, and a relentless reporter. Her instincts and her robust questioning while covering the Sandusky trial and the Penn State community are a testament to her award-winning journalism,” said Burke. “We are very fortunate to have her join our newsgathering team and we believe she has a bright future with CNN.”

Ganim holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Penn State University. In 2011, she was honored with the George Polk Award in journalism and the Sidney Award for socially-conscious journalism.

A source passed along a tip that Rima Maktabi may no longer be with CNN. Her twitter bio, which used to boast about her role as "CNN Anchor and Correspondent" is now reduced to nothing. Her bio is missing from the "Anchors" list but remains in the "Reporters M-Z" section which may mean nothing since the bio for Reynolds Wolf is still listed (and he's now freelance at The Weather Channel/NBC Universal) as well as Kathleen Parker, Bill Tucker, William Bennett, Gloria Rodriguez Mulloy, Sasha Rionda, (although those bio links are dead).

UPDATE from CNN after the jump.....

Maktabi joined CNN in 2010 as host of the magazine feature show Inside The Middle East and has had a few appearances on air outside of that show. However, she never played a key role in CNN's award-winning coverage of the Arab Spring.

She was clearly missing in CNN's "On The Frontlines" special where the stars of that coverage included Anchor/Correspondent Hala Gorani and Middle East Correspondent Arwa Damon, both of Arab origin as is Maktabi.

"The timing seems to align with Ms Maktabi's 2-year anniversary with CNN, the length of an average contract term. She could be in negotiations or out already. However, if she were staying with the company, her contract would've been renewed by now and her Twitter bio wouldn't have changed." says one source with knowledge of the inner-workings of CNN. "There is also the option that she was demoted to a desk job or maybe she is on leave to receive on-air training and accent reduction classes. She can certainly take advantage of both." added the source.

Inside The Middle East launched with Rula Amin (who is now an Al-Jazeera Correspondent). Hala Gorani hosted the show for years before returning to anchoring full-time for CNN International based in Atlanta. Producer Schams Elwazer in addition to various non-Arab reporters and anchors have rotated the hosting duties of the show at various times before Maktabi. Leone Lakani hosted the show in July and August - as Lakani asked users to contact her at the end of a recent episode of Inside The Middle East, we're thinking she may have replaced Maktabi on the show.

According to the source, "CNN Abu Dhabi, where Ms. Maktabi is based, seems to operate under different standards from the main CNN and all scenarios are possible. If I am to guess, I'd say she's out and already figuring out her next move. The most natural move would be a return to her previous employer Al-Arabiya. If this happens, one should expect that the Arab-language network will hail her return as a victory to help Ms. Maktabi save face from her record-short experience at CNN."

Again, the question is... Where is Rima? Fans on the Inside The Middle East Facebook Page have been asking as well:
Many people think she was not ready for air - with her thick accent, not really trained for CNN and not being comfortable in a live-shot situation. This probably teaches CNN a lesson about getting someone trained before rushing to put them on-air. What do you think? Click and comment below.
CNN Press Release - Sara Sidner is moving to CNN’s Jerusalem bureau as senior international correspondent, the network announced today.

Sidner will join CNN’s contingent of correspondents across the region, as the network underlines its commitment to Israel and the Middle East. In addition to its Jerusalem bureau, CNN has a production hub in Abu Dhabi as well as major operations in Amman, Cairo, Baghdad, Dubai and Beirut, where just last week the network added both a correspondent and producer/shooter.

Parisa Khosravi, Senior Vice President for CNN Worldwide in charge of International Newsgathering, said: “Sara’s drive, commitment, bravery and intelligence shines through in her reporting. Her work in Libya last year was truly inspiring, and I know that she will bring many valuable qualities to our Jerusalem bureau.”

Sidner shared the Achievement of the Year award at the 2011 Sky Women in Film & TV Awards for her reporting during the conflict in Libya. The WFT panel praised the example she had set to colleagues by taking to the streets alongside rebel fighters and reporting under fire in Tripoli.

With more than 15 years of television journalism experience, she has covered many stories of national and international importance, including the Mumbai terrorist attacks, the Pakistan floods, the Chile and Haiti earthquakes and Afghanistan’s elections. Most recently she has been based in New Delhi, where she was responsible for CNN’s coverage of India and South Asia.Dustinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00286797456910621339noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37772373.post-86673909522440092122012-09-11T00:20:00.000-04:002012-09-13T11:22:10.237-04:00CNN Washington bureau launches new state-of-the-art HD studio

CNN - With the studio's new technical tools and data visualization capabilities, the network is better positioned to tell the story for viewers on data-heavy nights like election night or during breaking news. The studio is a dual purpose facility; it has a dividing glass wall that enables the network to have simultaneous broadcasts in two separate studios or it can be one open space for big production programming, such as Election Night 2012.
He will continue in his current role until that time. Jim’s decision has the support and respect of Turner Broadcasting CEO Phil Kent. Phil will lead the search for Jim’s successor.

Employee note from Jim Walton is below as well as statements from Phil Kent and Jeff Bewkes. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Jim Walton note to staff:

After more than 30 years at this company and nearly 10 years as the leader of this great news organization, I have decided to leave my role at CNN on December 31, 2012.

For some time, I’ve been talking with Phil Kent about wanting to make a change, and he supports my decision. I’ve told Phil that I will cooperate with any transition timeline that he and Time Warner want to implement. Phil requested that I work out the year and be available after that if needed, which I’ve agreed to do.

I am proud of what we have accomplished together over these last 10 years – innovative programming, the development of great talent in front of and behind the cameras, expansion in digital and mobile, significant investment and expansion in international coverage, financial success and, most importantly, great and trusted journalism. Thank you for the role you have played in our successes.

CNN needs new thinking. That starts with a new leader who brings a different perspective, different experiences and a new plan, one who will build on our great foundation and will commit to seeing it through. And I'm ready for a change. I have interests to explore and I want to give myself time to do it.

The next few months will be filled with election news and other important events that will require all of our focus to report the news with the quality and expertise the world expects of CNN. I look forward to working alongside each of you, as I have over the past 30-plus years, to do just that.

Jim

Phil Kent quote:

Jim is the leader we all aspire to be: Smart and steady, tough and fair, business-savvy and respected by his team, and with a track record of great judgment when it matters most. His vision has modernized and globalized our legacy news brand, enhanced CNN’s journalistic standing, positioned it at the forefront of multi-platform branded news content and challenged the organization to think bigger, reach further and do better. I am honored to work alongside him and proud to call him my friend.

Phil Kent
Chairman and CEO, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.

Jeff Bewkes quote:

When Jim Walton assumed the presidency of CNN in 2003, it was underperforming and earnings were in serious decline. Since then, he and CNN have tripled earnings, doubled margin and delivered annual growth of 15 percent. In his nearly 31 years of uninterrupted and distinguished service to CNN, Jim has been instrumental in growing the business into the financial powerhouse it has become, while establishing the brand as the worldwide leader for television news. I respect him personally and professionally and support the decision he and Phil Kent have reached.

According to the Post, some within CNN are blaming the network's woes directly on frosty relations between Ken Jautz, executive vice president of CNN, and Mark Whitaker, executive vice president and managing editor for CNN Worldwide.

"Sources were quick to cite “misaligned management” within the top ranks as a major reason for the dysfunction. Jautz, who previously ran HLN, replaced former CNN US head Jon Klein two years ago — but some of Klein’s duties were given to Whitaker.

“When Jon was there, the structure was more linear,” said an insider, adding that Jautz and Whitaker, “have competing ideas for what we should do.”

The insider further told us: “Ken is not an editorial guy. He really is an operations guy. Mark’s strong suit is editorial, but he doesn’t know as much about television.”

Sources pointed to O’Brien’s show, which Whitaker oversees, as an example of competing, confusing philosophies. One insider said: “Ken does not like all of the ‘conversation on camera’ on the morning show. Mark does, because his vision is to make it that go-to conversation piece that ‘Morning Joe’ has become. It’s a constant battle.”

Making matters more unclear, both execs report to CNN honcho Jim Walton, and chatter’s swirling on how long he’ll remain."
