CNN's Continuing Coverage Of Japan Earthquake, Pacific Tsunami
CNN continues breaking news coverage of the earthquake in Japan. The network has advised of their current deployments and coverage plans for the rest of Friday.
CNN Press Release: An 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan on Friday, triggering tsunamis and sending a massive body of water filled with debris that included boats and houses inching toward highways. A tsunami in the Pacific was moving closer to other shorelines in other countries like Hawaii and Guam, said CNN meteorologist Ivan Cabrera.
CNN's Tokyo-based correspondent Kyung Lah (@KyungLahCNN) has been covering this story since it broke in the 1aET hour. CNN's Seoul-based correspondent Paula Hancocks (@phancocksCNN) has also joined Lah in Japan. Both teams are currently en route to Sendai, Japan, which is located near the quake's epicenter.

In the days following the devastating earthquake there have been brave and selfless acts of kindness and heroism throughout the country and CNN is dedicating this hour to acknowledge and honor those people. The hour will also follow up with some familiar faces: heroes who were honored by CNN’s annual initiative CNN Heroes and are in Haiti now working to rebuild the country. The special will air on Friday, January 29th on CNN and CNN International at 11pm ET.
Anderson Cooper’s reports on both tireless search and rescue teams as well as Haitians who suffered so much but who went on to help others while maintaining their resilient spirit. CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta will profile surgeons Jerry and Marlon Bitar, twin Haitian brothers who run a hospital in Haiti with minimum supplies, yet they are determined to save lives and rebuild their country. CNN international correspondent Ivan Watson will profile Francois Rozenvil Gertha, a Haitian UNICEF therapist working with the children of Haiti on what is being done to treat the long-term emotional turmoil that follows a human disaster of this magnitude. Before the earthquake, Haiti had an astonishing 380,000 orphans, a number that has greatly increased since. Gary Tuchman, CNN correspondent, introduces us to Jean Robert Cadet, a man committed to rescuing children who have been victimized in Haiti.
In addition to Haiti’s everyday heroes, the special hour will also revisit CNN Heroes who have stepped in and are helping out in the relief and rescue efforts in Haiti. CNN Heroes is in its fourth year of spotlighting everyday citizens accomplishing extraordinary deeds. Doc Hendley, 2009 CNN Top Ten Hero, whose charity Wine to Water brings sustainable water purification systems to countries in need, is distributing the much needed water to the citizens of Haiti. Tad Agoglia and his First Response Team, honored in 2008’s CNN Heroes Tribute Show, will bring their recovery equipment and will be going on missions throughout the city. Boby Duval’s group L’Athletique d’Haiti‘s after-school soccer program, featured in 2007’s CNN Heroes, was created to feed and tutor the children. The soccer field is now a makeshift home to displaced Haitians who are encamped in Cité Soleil.
The special hour is produced by Anderson Cooper 360° executive producer David Doss and CNN Heroes executive producer Kelly Flynn. Executive producer Charlie Moore from Haiti and producer Chuck Hadad in New York also contribute to this hour. The special will re-air on Saturday and Sunday, January 30 and 31st at 8 and 11pm ET and 2am ET.

Anderson Cooper Hosts New Year’s Eve Coverage Live from Times Square
CNN Pressroom - For the fourth year in a row, CNN’s Anderson Cooper will host live coverage of the New Year’s Eve celebration at New York City’s Times Square on Monday, Dec. 31, from 11 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. (ET). For “New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper,” CNN anchors and correspondents will provide reports from celebrations across the country and around the world.
Joining Cooper in Times Square will be American Morning anchor Kiran Chetry and Headline News anchor Erica Hill. CNN correspondent Gary Tuchman will report live from New York City’s Central Park for the annual Midnight Run. Correspondent Sean Callebs will report from New Orleans, while correspondent Kareen Wynter will be in Las Vegas.

Wolf Blitzer ‘Rewinds’ 2007 for Year-End Features for CNN Radio Affiliates

Anderson Cooper 360° Takes 24-Hour Look at Chicago after Student Slayings
CNN Pressroom - Special on Thursday, May 31, Examines Absence of National Outrage in Wake of 27 Murders this School Year
An unfathomable 27 public school students in Chicago were killed during this past school year – 20 shot, seven stabbed or suffocated. Despite these alarming statistics, this streak of youth violence has received little attention outside of the city. Arne Duncan, the CEO of Chicago Public Schools, claims that if the deaths had occurred in a white suburb, the outcry would be deafening, but, because it was inner-city violence, it has been ignored.
Anderson Cooper and correspondents David Mattingly, Keith Oppenheim and Gary Tuchman will examine what has led to this pattern of violence and try to shed light on who should be held accountable. The one-hour special, “24 Hours in Chicago,” recreates for its viewers a 24-hour stretch of time before one victim, Blair Holt, lost his life. The program airs during the first hour of Anderson Cooper 360° at 10pm on Thursday, May 31.
“One of our goals is to tell untold stories from around the world, and it is unconscionable that this particular story in Chicago happens to be among them,” said David Doss, senior executive producer of Anderson Cooper 360°. “We attempt to find out why there isn’t national outrage and also delve into how these tragedies occur in the first place.”
To that end, “24 Hours in Chicago,” examines the 24 hours prior to Blair Holt’s death. Holt, a 16-year-old son of a newly promoted Chicago Police captain, died of a gunshot wound on a public bus when he protected a friend from gang members shooting at a rival gang member. Mattingly weaves interviews from Blair’s parents, the surviving teenager, the shooter, detectives and school officials together into a story that ends with Blair’s violent death.
Cooper profiles a number of local youth programs designed to break the cycle of violence. In addition, Tuchman takes a critical look at where to place blame for such incidents, examining gun issues, poverty, gangs and a culture of violence. Oppenheim interviews a mother in one Chicago neighborhood forced to send her children to school on a street where bullets often fly.
