Bolduan named congressional correspondent

CNN Press Release - Kate Bolduan will join CNN’s Capitol Hill unit, it was announced today by David Bohrman, senior vice president of programming and Washington bureau chief. Bolduan will begin her new assignment Monday, April 25.

"Since Kate came over from Newsource, it has seemed like there was no story, no beat, no topic she couldn’t master,” said Bohrman. “She has excelled at everything from filling in at the White House, to covering the Supreme Court and even anchoring. Kate will be a great partner with Dana Bash and our Capitol Hill team as we move in to the exciting and unpredictable 2012 election year.”

Previously, Bolduan served as general assignment correspondent, where she covered a wide-range of stories including the 2009 Christmas Day bombing attempt, landmark Supreme Court rulings on campaign finance in the case of Citizens United v. FEC, gun rights in McDonald v. City of Chicago, and religious freedom in Salazar v. Buono. She also provided coverage of the rollout of the government’s $787 billion stimulus plan in 2009.

Bolduan joined CNN in 2007 as a national correspondent for CNN Newsource, providing breaking news coverage and feature reports for more than 800 CNN Newsource affiliates. During her time with Newsource, Bolduan covered the 2008 presidential election and traveled throughout the United States covering other national headlines including the Minneapolis bridge collapse, O.J. Simpson armed robbery case and launches and landings of the retiring NASA space shuttle fleet.

Prior to joining CNN Newsource, Bolduan was a general assignment reporter for WTVD-TV in Raleigh, N.C. She began her television career as a production assistant for NBC News and MSNBC in Washington D.C.

Bolduan graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor’s degree in journalism from The George Washington University.

Fox News’ ad today is blatantly false regarding CNN’s coverage of the 9/12 rally

[Editor's Note: FOX News released an advertisement stating that several news networks, including CNN, missed covering the 'Tea Party' story. Here is CNN's response to the ad.]

CNN Press Release
- CNN provided live coverage of the rally in Washington throughout the day Saturday, Sept. 12. CNN dispatched more than a dozen personnel and multiple camera crews, including the CNN Express, to cover the event. CNN’s deputy political director Paul Steinhauser was live at Freedom Plaza, CNN correspondent Kate Bolduan live from the West Front of the Capitol and roved the crowd, CNN’s Jim Spellman provided live hits all day after traveling for weeks on the actual Tea Party Express, and CNN’s Lisa Desjardins was live from the National Mall. CNN’s coverage included numerous live shots and interviews with protesters and newsmakers, including Sen. Jim DeMint who spoke at the rally and Art Gerhart, an activist, who was on the set with Don Lemon to discuss the rally.

CNN Reorganizes D.C. Assignments as New Administration, Congress Approach

In the wake of its highly acclaimed coverage of the presidential election campaign, CNN is redeploying some of its Washington-based correspondents in preparation for the new Obama administration and the incoming 111th Congress.

“During the election, CNN’s political reporters established themselves as the class of television news, both cable and broadcast,” said David Bohrman, CNN’s senior vice president and D.C. bureau chief. “Now we’re positioning them in key roles that will ensure the most thorough and informative coverage as President Obama and Congress tackle the thorniest problems America has faced in our lifetimes.”

The changes come on the heels of the announcement that CNN’s lead political anchor Wolf Blitzer will remain with the network through the next presidential election cycle and chief national correspondent John King will anchor a four-hour programming block on Sundays starting in January.

The noteworthy changes include:
· Ed Henry, who has provided comprehensive coverage of the Obama transition, becomes senior White House correspondent after coveringthe past two years of the George W. Bush White House and spending two years as CNN’s congressional correspondent. Suzanne Malveaux, who distinguished herself with exceptional coverage of the Obama presidential campaign and reported a two-hour documentary on the president-elect, returns to the White House. She will also serve as a primary substitute anchor for The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.Boston bureau chief and correspondent Dan Lothian, who reported extensively from the campaign trail in both 2004 and 2008, will become a White House correspondent as well.
· Dana Bash, who broke numerous exclusives while covering the Republican primaries and the McCain campaign, is named senior congressional correspondent. Bash has covered Congress for nearly a decade and was honored with the prestigious Dirksen Award in 2002. She will be joined on Capitol Hill by Brianna Keilar, who has served as a general assignment correspondent for the network for nearly three years and covered Capitol Hill and the White House during the election campaign.
· Jessica Yellin, one of the standouts of CNN’s presidential campaign coverage, becomes national political correspondent. In addition to The Situation Room, Campbell Brown: No Bias, No Bull and John King’s Sunday block, Yellin will file daily reports for CNN’s prime-time programming analyzing the most important stories on politics, policy and culture.
· Jill Dougherty is named foreign affairs correspondent. Dougherty, who covered the Clinton White House for CNN and then served as Moscow bureau chief and correspondent and managing editor for Asia/Pacific based in Hong Kong, will track Secretary of State nominee Hillary Clinton’s stewardship of American foreign policy.
· Correspondent Chris Lawrence, a veteran of the Navy Reserve who has spent four years as a general assignment correspondent in CNN’s Chicago and Los Angeles bureaus, becomes a Pentagon correspondent.
· Zain Verjee becomes news anchor for The Situation Room and will also file special reports for the program. While serving as CNN’s State Department correspondent for the past two years, Verjee traveled with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to more than a dozen countries, including Israel, Libya, Russia and South Korea. She also covered the violent conflicts in Kenya, her native country.
· Elaine Quijano shifts from the White House to general assignment correspondent to cover other Beltway issues while continuing to cover the White House. She will be joined by Kate Bolduan, who has been reporting for the network for months and officiallymoves from CNN’s Newsource affiliate service.

Observations: New Bios, New Set, Situation Room Fill-In

• Two new bios have been added to CNN.com: Reggie Aqui and Kate Bolduan (Thanks, Bill!)

• Hong Kong's set has arrived. You can view an opening from CNN Today HK featuring the new set at YouTube. I think it's great that they've finally gotten all 3 sets together so that when they switch to Weather it looks seamless.

• Carol Costello filled-in for Wolf Blitzer today on The Situation Room.

• Mike Galanos has become a correspondent for Prime News with Erica Hill on Headline News. He's come full-circle with this appointment basically because the two used to host the show together. You can view a video of his first Prime News report here.
