It'll be interesting to see if this is a permanent change. And if so, how will it work out during simulcasts of CNN/US, when the flipper is placed over the domestic CNN ticker.

CNN Takes News into High-Definition Era with CNN-HD
In another pioneering move in network news, CNN plans to claim its position in the high-definition space with the launch of the first nationwide high-definition news channel, it was announced this week by Jim Walton, president of CNN Worldwide. CNN-HD is slated for a Fall 2007 launch.
“CNN has traditionally stood as a first mover in broadcast technology, not only with 24-hour news but with newsgathering from every part of the globe,” said Jim Walton, president of CNN Worldwide. “CNN takes the news industry’s first giant step into high definition with CNN-HD.”
“Given that CNN continues to attract a greater number of unique viewers than any other cable news network, it’s the optimal choice for the next high-definition offering from Turner Broadcasting,” said Coleman Breland, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Turner Network Sales. “We’re pleased to offer this compelling network in high definition to our distribution partners and viewers.”
One distributor, DIRECTV, has already announced they will carry CNN-HD. DIRECTV this week announced the launch and carriage of 100 national high-definition channels, with the majority of them becoming available to subscribers in the third quarter of 2007.

A Smerconish talk-show pilot?
Isn't he on radio?
Talk is that Smerconish, with backing from TV savvy next-door neighbor Pat Croce, is putting together a talk-show pilot for CNN and has studio time booked this week to shoot the bulk of it.
Smerconish, who hosts mornings on WPHT (1210), is a frequent guest on CNN, as well as NBC. Buttonholed later, Smerconish and Croce were uncharacteristically quiet.
A CNN rep says the network asks for many pilots and generally does not comment on them.

CNN.com Offers Interactive ‘MLK: Words that Changed a Nation’
Handwritten sermons from the U.S. Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Pencil edits of statements from a Birmingham, Ala., jail. A worn scrap of paper found the day he died. Through exclusive access to the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Collection, CNN.com has created a special section that delves into a personal side of the civil rights leader few have seen.
Launched in conjunction with the five-part series “MLK: Words that Changed a Nation” airing this week during CNN’s American Morning, the online report illustrates five parts of King’s adult life – his role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott; the formation of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference; the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom; his receipt of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize and the 1965 march in Selma, Ala., for voting rights; and his assassination in 1968.
The online “MLK: Words that Changed a Nation” is located at www.CNN.com/mlk.
The King family and Morehouse College’s Woodruff Library granted CNN exclusive access to rare documents, books, notes, sermons and other writings that represent the foundation of King’s life’s work as a preacher and human rights activist. From King’s private library, CNN reveals his personal philosophy and theology – and his doubts and fears – as he and those around him created a peaceful revolution that forever altered a nation.
The Web site provides a close-up look at some of King’s documents, photo galleries and timelines of King and the civil rights movement and the history of how Morehouse College obtained the collection. Video available on the site include segments that have aired on CNN/U.S., an exclusive interview of former U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young recalling King’s final moments and an account of civil rights workers describing how they smuggled paper to King to write his famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail.”
CNN.com has also produced an “All Access: Backstage Pass” video podcast showing behind-the-scenes footage of anchor Soledad O’Brien traveling to Morehouse in Atlanta to review some of the King documents and to interview some of his colleagues. CNN’s podcasts are available at www.CNN.com/podcasting, as well as at iTunes.
CNN.com is also soliciting I-Reports – content submitted from viewers from their cell phones, cameras and other devices – to encourage users to describe how King’s words and actions influenced them. Such reports can be sent to CNN.com at http://www.cnn.com/exchange/ireports/topics/forms/2007/01/mlk.html
As the first Internet site dedicated to 24-hour news coverage, CNN.com ranks as a leading online news and information site, attracting an average of 23 million unique users each month. Launched in 1995, CNN.com draws from the resources of CNN Worldwide to provide relevant, up-to-the minute news and information. CNN.com features the latest multimedia technologies, from video streaming to audio packages to searchable archives of news features and background information.
CNN to Air First Debates for 2008 Presidential Race from New Hampshire
CNN is teaming up with WMUR-TV and the New Hampshire Union Leader to host “First in the Nation: Presidential Primary Debates,” two back-to-back debates to be held in America’s first primary state. Featuring Republican and Democratic presidential candidates, the debates will be held on consecutive evenings, Wednesday, April 4, and Thursday, April 5.
CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, anchor of the daily political newscast The Situation Room and the Sunday public affairs program Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer, will moderate the debates. Union Leader political columnist John DiStaso and WMUR political director Scott Spradling will lead the panel, and WMUR anchor Jennifer Vaughn will moderate questions from the live audience.
In addition to live prime-time airings on both CNN and WMUR, a live video stream of WMUR and in-depth coverage from the Union Leader will be offered. The debates’ impact will also be enhanced by CNN’s multiple platforms. The broadcasts will be made available to all CNN Radio affiliates worldwide. In addition, there will be special coverage on CNN.com; CNN Pipeline, CNN.com’s premium live news video service; CNN Podcasting; Headline News and CNN en Español.
“We are thrilled to host the first debates of this landmark election,” said CNN/U.S. president Jon Klein. “With an open field in both the Republican and Democratic parties, it is going to be vital for viewers to learn as much as possible about these candidates early on – particularly in unscripted settings like debates.”
“We think it only makes sense that the state with the first-in-the-nation primary also has the first-in-the-nation presidential debate,” said Jeff Bartlett, WMUR general manager. “Many candidates and potential candidates have already made numerous trips to New Hampshire, and we felt that April would be a good time for the voters here to get their first impression about how the candidates stack up against one another.”
Joseph W. McQuaid, president and publisher of the New Hampshire Union Leader, said, “The issues facing the next administration are as crucial as they have ever been for this country. It is not too early for the first primary state to present a forum to explore the views and the competence of serious candidates.”'
Information on the location and exact times of the two New Hampshire debates will be forthcoming.

CNN Launches New Weekly Investigative Series
CNN Pressroom - Expanding the network's commitment to investigative reporting, CNN this month launches a new long-form investigative series titled CNN: Special Investigations Unit. The new program, airing Saturdays and Sundays at 8 p.m. (ET), will feature CNN’s top correspondents delivering in-depth hours on pressing issues currently in the news. The programs’ topical subject matter will complement CNN Presents, the acclaimed documentary series that will hone its focus on longer-lead-time, multi-hour “event” programming such as last summer’s blockbuster “In the Footsteps of bin Laden.”
CNN: Special Investigations Unit taps into the network’s worldwide resources and deep bench of top-notch journalists including chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour, anchors Anderson Cooper and Soledad O’Brien, chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, correspondents John Roberts, John King, Candy Crowley, Drew Griffin and others to offer a strong new brand of enterprise investigative reports.
“Special Investigations Unit pulls together our unparalleled stable of reporters and our unmatched journalistic reach,” said Jon Klein, president of CNN/U.S. “There is no better team in television news to step up and fill the gaping void in in-depth reporting on the truly important stories of the moment.”
The first CNN: Special Investigations Unit documentary will be a one-hour examination of the troubling home-grown Muslim extremism in the United Kingdom. Reported by Amanpour, The War Within examines the cultural conflicts within Britain’s Muslim communities and the alienation felt by many young Muslims living inside Western societies. The War Within premieres on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 8 p.m. (ET).
The new investigative series is produced by CNN Productions, the same unit that will continue to produce CNN Presents – the most honored documentary series in cable news. Four major CNN Presents documentaries are in the works for the coming year. Mark Nelson is the head of CNN Productions. A veteran producer, Nelson joined the unit six months ago as its vice president and senior executive producer.

Glenn Beck Offers Quarterly Specials for New Year
CNN Pressroom - Headline News’ Glenn Beck, the nightly topical talk show featuring radio personality Glenn Beck, will produce a series of quarterly specials in 2007, titled “Exposed,” addressing some of the most hotly debated issues of the day, it was announced today by Ken Jautz, executive vice president of CNN Worldwide, to the Television Critics Association.
“When Glenn’s first special, which was on the Mideast, set a new ratings record for Headline News, we knew we were onto something,” Jautz said. “Glenn’s unique style works well for his everyday show format, but giving him a full hour on just one topic really gives him the chance to delve deeper, in a way that clearly resonates with his viewers. We look forward to hearing what Glenn has to say on these timely and provocative issues.”
“We often don’t have time to fully explore the nuances of the issues that most Americans want to hear more about,” Beck said. “I’m looking forward to having that opportunity with these specials. As we peel back the layers on these topics, we will likely be sparking a lot of dinner-table debates, which is exactly what we set out to do with our show every night.”
The first Glenn Beck special will premiere in late February or early March. Among the topics the program will examine for the specials over the coming year include:
· Myths of Global Warming. As scientists reach consensus about warming temperatures, Beck takes a provocative look at the causes and effects of global warming, particularly whether people or natural climate cycles are to blame. As he seeks answers to whether global warming can actually be stopped, Beck also asks if such efforts undermine America’s financial and military prominence.
· End of Days. Many Americans believe that an apocalypse foretold in Revelations is impending, preceded by the destruction of Israel and great floods. Beck takes an hour to examine whether current events really points to such signs.
· Islam in America. In this one-hour special, Beck attempts to put a face on the practitioners of Islam within the United States, including a Muslim cadet at West Point and an imam in Boston who told followers they should conquer America.
Since the launch of Glenn Beck on May 8, 2006, ratings in all demographics have increased double digits versus the same time a year ago. Glenn Beck has seen a 65 percent increase in total viewers and an unprecedented 86 percent increase in the advertiser-coveted P25-54 demo. Ratings gains were similar for the two youngest news demos, including a 95 percent increase in P18-49 versus a year ago.
Headline News, a division of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., a Time Warner Company, updates viewers constantly, 24 hours each day, with complete and concise national newscasts throughout the day and a compelling slate of legal, entertainment and talk programs during Headline Prime at night. The “Need to Know” network delivers fast-paced, lively and engaging news, using the best resources of CNN Worldwide. Headline News is designed especially for viewers who want relevant and comprehensive news in a way that suits the urgency of their schedules.

President Bush speech coverage, scheduling
CNNI will be repeating Bush's speech this morning at 1000 gmt, taking up half an hour of the usual Larry King replay, which will begin at 1030 gmt and will only be half an hour long.
CNN/O reader Hugo confirms that the schedule change I spotted last night has been the case all week. Insight is no longer repeated at 2300 gmt - instead we get CNN Today live from Hong Kong.
Hugo also mentions that there is an extra half hour of Your World Today, so I imagine this is taking the place of the usual live Insight at 1900 gmt.
I'd find it asounding if they have axed Insight. Obviously, checking the CNNI schedule on CNN.com is pointless - that still has the summer timezones on it (ie. CET = GMT+2).

CNN’s David Mattingly Joins Anderson Cooper 360* as Contributor
CNN Pressroom - David Mattingly, a national correspondent for CNN, will join Anderson Cooper 360* as a regular contributor, it was announced today by David Doss, the program’s senior executive producer. A correspondent with CNN since 1992, Mattingly will remain based in the network’s Atlanta headquarters.
“We see David as an invaluable asset to the 360 team. He’s an outstanding storyteller and a fantastic journalist,” Doss said. “We look forward to seeing his contributions on AC360 on a more regularly basis in the near future.”
Mattingly has covered events across the United States and the world through some of the nation’s most trying moments, including the wrath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, first from the beaches of south Florida and then from the streets of New Orleans’ French Quarter.
He also contributed to the network’s award-winning coverage of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks after he left a vacation near Shanksville, Penn., to become one of the first reporters to cover the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 from the scene. In February 2003, Mattingly was part of the team of CNN correspondents and anchors that covered the breaking news story of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. Mattingly also reported and narrated No Survivors – Why TWA 800 Could Happen Again for CNN Presents.
Before joining CNN, Mattingly was a news anchor, reporter and documentary producer at WVTM in Birmingham, Ala. He earned his bachelor of arts in journalism from the University of Alabama.

Poor timekeeping
"..That's coming up at 1400 gmt, that's in just under an hour from now."
An onscreen graphic also gave the time as 1400 gmt (I forget what the other timezones said, but I'm sure they were the respective hours ahead of/behind gmt)
Part correct - Late Edition IS just under an hour away, but that is 1600 gmt!
I'm quite sure I saw the same thing happen last Sunday morning, but I just assumed that Late Edition was earlier due to it being New Years Eve. However, it seems like a recurring error. Not what you'd expect from the "world's news leader", who have always worked to gmt.

Saddam cellphone video
Interestingly, an editorial decision was made to show a weblink on screen to the whole video. The link was to a .3gp file, based on an Arabic language website and was part of the black and white astons used to display information on CNNI, in the position ususally used to credit video from an external source.
New Hong Kong studio designs, new sets concept
The designers and builders of the new CNNI sets have posted a case study document online. It explains the concept behind the sets, confirms the technology used (plasma and rear-projection screens) and shows the original plans for all three sets, including the forthcoming Hong Kong set.
You can see that some aspects of the new sets were dropped from the final end product.

Insight re-run
World Sport end of year special
The show makes much use of the video wall in Atlanta, with Terry standing at the wall, and the other three at CNN Center contributing their pieces via the video wall. You can see how crowded the CNNI Atlanta set is during the cut-away to the first commerical break - three round the desk, and Terry Baddoo lurking behind them!
The recently returned Pedro Pinto got a look in right at the very end, knocking on the screen behind all the anchors pleading "Hey..what about me". "Better luck next time", Terry tells him.
Incidentally, it's occured to me recently how small the Atlanta set actually is. This is evident particularly during the behind-the-anchor-desk shots towards the weather position - not much room for the cameras between these two positions.
