CNN Press Release - Jim Acosta has been named national political correspondent, it was announced today by Sam Feist, Washington bureau chief and senior vice president. Acosta begins his new assignment as national political correspondent immediately.

Previously, Acosta served as a CNN correspondent reporting from the field and within the beltway on a wide-range of national stories including, the 2010 midterm elections and 2008 presidential election, when he covered the campaigns of then-Sen. Hillary Clinton, Sen. John McCain and then-Sen. Barack Obama. In 2009, Acosta traveled to Cuba to report from Havana on the effects of the Obama administration’s policy change to American travel restrictions in that country. Prior to CNN, Acosta was a correspondent for CBS News, where he contributed to CBS Evening News and covered stories including the Iraq War from Baghdad, the 2004 presidential campaign of Sen. John Kerry and Hurricane Katrina.

CNN today announced the hiring of Bloomberg's Lizzie O'Leary. She will assume the role of Aviation and Regulation Correspondent when she starts at the network later this month.

CNN Press Room: Lizzie O’Leary will join CNN in the newly-created aviation and regulation correspondent position, it was announced today by Sam Feist, CNN Washington bureau chief and senior vice president. O’Leary will report on all facets of U.S. transportation, including air, rail, maritime and space, in addition to covering the many agencies in Washington that have a daily impact on the lives of Americans.

“Lizzie brings to the beat everything we’re looking for,” said Feist. “She is a smart and experienced reporter, and I look forward to Lizzie joining our ranks as we expand reporting out of the Washington bureau.”

O’Leary joins CNN Washington from Bloomberg Television, where she was D.C.-based correspondent covering politics and economic policy. In that role, she reported on the global credit crisis, the housing market and the government’s financial rescue package. In 2010, she interviewed U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner during a trip to Mumbai, India. She was also first to break the news that major American automaker Chrysler would file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Previously, O’Leary was producer and reporter for National Public Radio. She got her start in journalism at ABC News, where she was a member of the Peabody Award-winning team that covered the terror attacks of September 11th.

O’Leary earned her master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and graduated cum laude with her bachelor’s degree from Williams College.

MARK PRESTON becomes CNN Political Director. In this role, Mark will be CNN’s primary contact with political campaigns at both the state and national level. His work is integral to organizing critical CNN events such as presidential debates and forums. He will help set editorial direction for CNN’s programs during the election season, including primary and election nights. Mark is also one of the great political reporters in Washington and we will continue to lean on Mark’s reporting and analysis both on TV and online throughout the coming campaign. Mark will report to Eric Sherling.

PAUL STEINHAUSER becomes CNN Political Editor and supervising producer of the CNN Political Unit. He will be responsible for overseeing CNN’s political newsgathering operations. As the leader of the political beat, Paul will be responsible for assigning and managing CNN’s political coverage team including correspondents, producers, desk editors, polling, research, and the CNN Political Ticker. Paul’s proven leadership and keen political analysis will be invaluable as CNN heads into this historic election year. Paul and the Political Unit will report to Edith Chapin.

Former NBC White House producer Athena Jones has joined CNN as a general assignment reporter, based at the network's Washington bureau. Jones had been serving as a freelance segment producer for CNN previously. Details from CNN below.

Previously, Jones was a White House producer with NBC, where she wrote packages, produced story segments and reported on air for MSNBC and NBC News. Jones covered the Clinton and Obama presidential campaigns during the 2008 election cycle for NBC and the National Journal. Prior to NBC, Jones served as a freelance segment producer for CNN. From 2001 to 2003, Jones worked as a reporter for Reuters based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she covered the Argentine presidential elections as well as other general news stories. Prior to Reuters, Jones reported on politics and the economy in both Chile and Argentina for Bloomberg News.

Jones graduated cum laude from Harvard University and earned her master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University. She studied Spanish and European politics at the University of Madrid Complutense in Madrid, Spain; and studied Islamic studies at the American Research Center in Cairo, Egypt, with Duke University.

Yellin joined CNN as a Capitol Hill correspondent in August 2007.

Sam Feist has been upped to Washington Bureau Chief for CNN.

CNN yesterday announced a third Republican debate they'll host in Las Vegas this October. CNN's press release follows.

CNN Press Release: The Western Republican Leadership Conference (WRLC) announced Wednesday that it has selected CNN to host a Republican presidential primary debate in Las Vegas on Tuesday, October 18, 2011. Nevada has been chosen by the Republican National Committee (RNC) to be one of the first states to vote in the Republican presidential primary process in 2012.

Republican leaders and activists from 16 states and territories that make up the RNC’s Western Region will meet at the The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas during the week of October 17 for the “Western Republican Leadership Conference.” The debate will take place as part of the WRLC’s four-day conference and will provide voters from across the nation an opportunity to hear Republican presidential candidates offer their visions for the future.

"Republicans in Western States will play an important role in determining the next Republican nominee for president," said former Nevada Congressman Jon Porter, chairman of the Western Republican Leadership Conference. "On behalf of the Western Republican Leadership Conference, I am excited to be working with CNN on this important debate. I look forward to hosting our 2012 Presidential candidates, and showcasing their ideas on Western and national issues."

“Nevada is the gateway to the West in the 2012 Republican presidential primary,” said Sam Feist, CNN’s political director and vice president of Washington programming. “This is an opportunity for GOP presidential candidates to speak, in person, to Nevada Caucus-goers as well as voters from the 15 other states and territories represented by the Western Region.”

WRLC attendees will have an opportunity to participate in questioning the candidates seeking the Republican presidential nomination. CNN will also co-host two other debates in 2011 as previously announced. CNN, along with the New Hampshire Union Leader and WMUR-TV, will present a Republican presidential primary debate on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 in Manchester, New Hampshire. On Monday, September 12, 2011, CNN and the Tea Party Express will team up for a debate among the Republican candidates in Tampa, Florida, the site of the 2012 Republican National Convention.

The Western Republican Leadership Conference is a four-day conference designed to educate, motivate and activate Republicans from the Republican National Committee’s Western Region. Hosted by The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas in October of 2011, the event will feature Republican candidates, operatives, leaders and elected officials from around the Western Region and the nation. The WRLC will spotlight Nevada’s new and unique role as the first in the West Republican Presidential nominating contest.
